History of Berber

It’s ironic that so many people enjoy Berber carpets in their homes and cars, but yet, so few people know the history behind Berber or how it is created. The origin of Berber carpets dates all the way back to the Paleolithic era (or Stone Age) when they were made by Berbers in North Africa. Hence how Berber carpets got their name.

For hundreds of years, Berber people have hand-spun their own cloaks and coats using the same techniques that are still used today to create Berber carpets. Made of wool, their cloaks have the same characteristics of Berber carpet, including the looping. The beauty of their cloaks and carpets is what inspired the ever-so-popular Berber carpeting that people can purchase today. While most Berber carpets are machine made these days, the Berber people still continue to hand make their own cloaks and carpets.

What is Berber?

Berber carpets are a style of carpet that is created using two or more colors. They use a loop pile construction type, containing big and small tufts, and typically contain small flecks of color on lighter shades of background colors. Berber carpets tend to be very durable, and hide dirt and stains well due to their mixed-color design. That’s why this style of carpeting is often found in schools, offices and other areas with a high volume of foot traffic.

Today, you’ll find several types of Berber carpets available, all made from a wide range of different materials. The most common materials used are nylon, olefin and wool. Because of its affordability, olefin is the most commonly used material overall. The affordability of Berber carpets is another reason for its popularity in homes and offices. They don’t cost a fortune upfront and they last a long time, making them a smart investment in the long run.
